Welcome to
Oklahoma Backroad Explorer
Where the road less traveled leads to the stories worth telling. From rusted fences to golden hour skies, I capture the soul of rural Oklahoma one photo at a time. Every image, every product, is rooted in authenticity and adventure. Take a look around, there’s a piece of the backroads waiting for you.
Storm season in Oklahoma has a way of keeping you on your toes.
On this evening, a tornado-warned storm churned south of me. As the storm slowly weakened, its massive overshooting anvil drifted overhead, carrying wave after wave of mammatus clouds across the sky.
To the west, the horizon was clear.
Then the unimaginable happened.
The setting sun slipped beneath the storm and ignited the entire sky. The mammatus clouds glowed like molten fire overhead while brilliant crepuscular rays burst from the horizon, stretching across the prairie in every direction.
For a few breathtaking minutes, it felt as though the sky itself was burning.
The old windmill stood silently beneath the display, dwarfed by the power and beauty unfolding above it.
I've witnessed a lot of Oklahoma sunsets, but some moments leave you speechless. This was one of them.
A reminder that sometimes the most extraordinary sights arrive just after the storm begins to fade.
Awakened Under Fire
Some of my favorite photographs aren't planned.
This evening started with a simple trip to the pasture to count cattle. As we made our way through the field, the cows noticed us and immediately became curious. Thinking there might be feed involved, they slowly started making their way in our direction.
At the same time, the sun was beginning to sink toward the horizon.
With every step they took, the scene seemed to come together. The golden light grew stronger, sun rays stretched across the Oklahoma sky, and the curious cattle naturally lined up in front of the sunset.
Knowing the moment wouldn't last long, I dropped flat into the grass to capture their world from eye level.
For a few brief moments, everything aligned perfectly.
The light. The landscape. The cattle.
A reminder that sometimes the best moments aren't found by chasing them. They're found by simply being present when they arrive.
Finding Our Way
I've spent plenty of time chasing sunsets, storms, and backroads, but every now and then nature surprises you with something completely different.
On this day, I found myself standing in a field of giant sunflowers.
And when I say giant, I mean giant. Some of these flowers were as big as my head—and I have a pretty big head, so that's saying something.
Just being surrounded by them felt almost otherworldly. Row after row of golden blooms stretched across the field, each one quietly doing its job, turning sunlight into life.
Then I noticed a bee working its way from flower to flower.
I started firing away with the camera, taking hundreds of photos and hoping one might capture the moment. The bee was fast, unpredictable, and had no interest in posing for a picture.
By the time I got home, I wasn't even sure I had a single usable frame.
Turns out I did.
For a fraction of a second, everything came together—the sunflower, the light, and one tiny worker suspended in midair.
A reminder that some of nature's hardest workers are also the easiest to overlook.
Sun Workers
Cotton Candy Windmill
I've never completely understood why some sunsets arrive like fire while others arrive like a whisper.
Some evenings, the sky burns with deep reds and oranges that demand your attention. Other times, like this one, the colors are softer. Gentle shades of pink, purple, and blue drift across the horizon like brush strokes on a canvas.
This was one of those evenings.
The old windmill stood quietly in the prairie grass as the sky slowly transformed into shades that almost didn't seem real. There was no storm. No dramatic weather. No urgency.
Just peace.
As I stood there watching the last light fade, I was reminded of something we often forget.
Life doesn't always need to be loud to be beautiful.
Sometimes the most meaningful moments are the quiet ones. The moments that ask nothing from us except to slow down, look around, and appreciate them before they slip away.
The sunset was gone within minutes.
The reminder has stayed with me ever since.
