The Backroads of Oklahoma…

About Me

My name is David Schweitzer, and I’m the soul behind Oklahoma Backroad Explorer.

I wasn’t always a photographer. For years, I walked through fire—fighting battles with addiction, illness, and loss. But through it all, I held onto hope. And somewhere along the backroads of Oklahoma, with a camera in my hand and healing in my heart, I found my way forward.

Photography became more than a hobby—it became a way to see the world with new eyes. Each photo tells a piece of that story. A story of second chances, of slowing down and listening to the land, of chasing sunsets not just for beauty, but for peace.

These days, I live in Calumet, Oklahoma, with my two greatest gifts—my wife Jenny, whose love helped ground me when I needed it most, and our dog Baker, a basset hound/dachshund mix who reminds me daily not to take life too seriously. Whether I’m exploring forgotten towns, searching for gold, or standing in silence beneath a wide open sky, I do it all with deep gratitude and a desire to connect.

This isn’t just photography. It’s a reminder that no matter how far gone we feel, there’s still beauty left to find—and stories worth telling.
